Stadium Overview
It's no secret that Coors Field is an outlier. Located in downtown Denver, the stadium sits more than 5,000 feet above sea level and about 4,000 above Chase Field (the next highest in MLB). To say the thin air gives the ball a distance boost at Coors would be an understatement. A fly ball expected to travel 400 feet in other parks typically carries about anywhere from 20 to 40 feet farther depending on the launch angle. And it isn't just hits that are affected by the low-friction atmosphere. Balls thrown around the field have been estimated to travel 7-10% further, and even breaking pitches are known to hold their line a bit longer, which gives hitters an even larger advantage.

The outfield at Coors Field is oversized out of necessity. It measures 347 and 350 down the lines (2nd furthest in MLB) and the fence in center extends horizontally, making the straight-away 415 marker seem shallow compared to the even deeper gaps. Coors has the most square footage of fair territory in the league and the fence measures 17 feet high for nearly the entire right side of the field.

In addition to its extreme altitude, Coors Field is also known for its dry climate (ranked 28th in humidity), which can cause baseballs to dry out and jump off the bat at higher velocities. To counteract this effect, the Rockies were the first team back in 2003 to store their baseballs in a humidor, which adds moisture to the ball making it less springy as it exits the bat.

Usually, parks that give up lots of home runs rank lower for doubles and triples (and vice versa). Not Coors Field, where the high altitude and enormous outfield coalesce to form a hitters paradise. Overall, Ballpark Pal ranks the Denver venue #2 in MLB for home runs, #1 for doubles and triples, and #1 for total runs.

The temperature in Denver can be extremely variable throughout the year. 'Snowed out' games in April aren't uncommon and the temperature easily reaches the high-80s during the summer. Nearly 50% of games at Coors are played either below 60 or above 80 degrees, making time-of-year a significant factor toward hitting conditions.

As much as varying temperatures can affect the game, Coors Field is actually pretty immune to wind for a fully outdoor venue (ranked 18th in wind receptiveness). It's ranked 3rd in MLB for park variation, more due to the fluctuating temperatures than the effect of the wind.
