Stadium Overview
Citi Field was a pure pitchers park when it hosted its first Mets game in 2009, as it rivaled Oracle Park, Kauffman Stadium, and Comerica Park for the most square feet of fair territory. But the Mets front office almost immediately had second thoughts. Just two years later, the deep fences were moved in significantly, and then again in 2015 to where they stand today. While the Queens venue still maintains one of the deepest fences to straight away center (408 feet), it ranks in the middle of the pack for home runs (19th in MLB).

The result of all the fence tweaking has resulted in a unique shape to say the least. Perhaps more than any other venue, the outcome of a Citi Field fly ball is highly dependent on the precise line it takes from home plate. 10-15 yards one way or the other can easily turn a home run into an out (and vice versa). Technically, the CF fence is 5th deepest in the league, but it sharply narrows in on both sides making the power alleys decent home run targets. However, the shape of the outfield is not susceptible to doubles and triples as Citi ranks at the very bottom of the league for in-the-yard extra base hits.

One of the main contributors to Citi Fields pitchers park prowess is a reduction in batter contact. According to the Ballpark Pal model, hitters at Citi Field are nearly 2% less likely to put the ball in play (after controlling for player skill levels). Overall Ballpark Pal rates the venue 2nd worst in the league for runs (-8%).

As much as it varies from corner to corner, Citi Field is fairly stubborn when it comes to being influenced by wind. Ballpark Pal ranks it 27th in wind effect as the difference between an in-blowing 10 mph wind and out-blowing one is only about 1 percentage point of carry. Itís easy to understand why as the tall bleachers and humongous scoreboards in center field effectively prevent the wind from making its way to the playing surface.

Any sort of variability associated with Citi Field is due mainly to temperature as games played in the 50s are about as common as those 85 degrees and above. Overall, Ballpark Pal rates Citi Field 14th in day-to-day variation, putting it in the bottom half for fully outdoor venues.
